This time of year I usually have the house smelling sweet and festive with a scented candle in every corner, but with a new little set of lungs in the house I avoid using any type of air freshener which may contain Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDC’s) or phthalates which are known to interfere with the production of testosterone and have been associated with reproductive abnormalities; Cancer causing chemicals such as benzene and formaldehyde and/or other Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) and allergens.

Real sugar and spice and everything nice makes a healthier alternative for everyone!

1 1/2 Cup of Water

3 cinnamon sticks

1 tbsp. whole cloves

1 tbsp. sugar

2 orange wheels (optional)

Just add all ingredients to a mini crockpot, dip warmer, pot-pourri simmering pot or just a regular pot on the stove on lowest heat. It takes about half an hour to start breaking down the spices and releasing the scent.

You will have to add new ingredients every once in awhile (depending on how often and how long you are simmering) and be sure to keep adding water as it boils down.

This recipe is meant to be followed loosely, you can fine tune it until you find the perfect christmas bouquet; I change it up a bit every time (as I do with many of my recipes). You can more or less add any spice (whole or ground) that you would use in gingerbread, molasses cookies or pumpkin pie.

Here are a few I found in my cabinet (the unlabelled one is allspice):

Ground cinnamon, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, ground ginger, pumpkin pie spice, allspice, brown sugar.
